explore

In this workshop, Edzi’u takes the participants through a walk amidst their environment. The power of listening is explored, and meditative techniques are used to explore our human range of listening and hearing. The participants are challenged to hear sound as if it were a visual art piece, observing each section of the piece sonically, and playing with the texture and vision of the world around us.

The intention of this workshop is directs the participants direction to the environment around us, and brings awareness and focus to not only the listener but how audio sensory stimulants react in ones body and mind.

Listening intentionally requires a direct attention to the world around us, a noticing of our surroundings in an intentional way.

Songs are vessels of history, tradition, and adaptation. Through soundscapes and audio recordings, storytelling exists in the medium of music and captures experience in its own unique way.

In this workshop, participants use their environment and voices to record sounds around them. Accessible recording techniques are explored, such as how to listen and gage a sound for recording, how to capture what you hear, and visual techniques for how close to record a sound.

After we've taken some recordings, we will reconvene in the classroom, where we will play with the recordings to explore texture and reframing song forms. Weaving our recordings together, we will collectively begin the process of starting a new sound piece.

The act of recording requires a direct attention to the world around us, a noticing of our surroundings in an intentional way. The participants will gain some new insight to beginning the art of creating sound pieces, and exploring form.

The group goes further into designing a soundscape, explores software instruments to add more textures, and collectively writes a piece as a whole.

Participants in this workshop gain more depth into what goes into the creation of a sound piece, through listing and creating. At the end of the workshop, Edzi’u takes these collective sound and builds a soundscape for the group. Fusing sounds found and made during the workshop with her own thoughtfulness, intent, and skill, Edzi’u creates a soundscape from the intentional space created in the workshop.
